The several communities of Punjab have rich histories and various unique cultural practices. Their music has evolved over the centuries and varying genres and styles are used for different occasions within each community. However, the emotion that is expressed through all of these genres is that of joy and celebration. True, some Punjabi music may be solemn in nature yet, on the whole, Punjabi culture is largely that of unrestrained revelry. Each community celebrates its occasions through the medium of music. Marriages and births, festivals and feasts are celebrated with great joy and gusto. Historical events such as the victory of rebels over the British or the victory of the Sikh community over the Moghul army etc. are commemorated by way of music too. Dance is an inherent part of all celebrations in Punjab especially with regard to the Sikh community. The Sikh musical heritage boasts of a number of dance genres ranging from Bhangra
to Jhummer to Malwai Giddha and several more. The music associated with these performances has an unmistakable upbeat character to it. Celebratory music takes on a different form in the largely Muslim tradition of Sufi music and yet expresses a secularity emerging from the shared land and history. This album presents authentic instrumentals from different genres performed at a range of events and occasions and features several well-known artists from across Punjab.
